Rodrigo Duterte, 16th president of the Republic of the Philippines, has stated his plans of talking to the Abu Sayyaf Group regarding several issues, especially kidnapping. Duterte to Abu Sayyaf: “Are they willing to talk or do we just fight it out?”
Duterte stated that he wants kidnapping to stop which is causing an atrocious image for the Philippines. He also expressed that it would hard for him to use public funds to buy rifles and bullets, canon and bombs to kill fellow Filipino but if needed, he would.
Abu Sayyaf Group, which is known to be behind the series of kidnapping in the country, has recently freed Marites Flor, who kidnapped by the terrorist group for nine months. Flor was held captive including two Canadian and one Norwegian Citizen, but the ASG has already beheaded the two Canadian hostages due to no ransom was paid for their release while the Norwegian captive is still on their hands.
With the help of Duterte, Marites Flor was released and presented during his speech in Cebu. According to Flor, a member of ASG suddenly woke her up, accompany her and released in front of the residence of Abdusakur Tan, who is currently the Governor of Sulu.
After the Duterte’s administration stated that they are currently negotiating for the release of Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, who is also one of the victims who were kidnapped on Samal Island last September 2015.
Duterte stated that they are also in the process of talking to Communist and is expecting to gain positive results. He also said that he would feel accomplished once lasting peace has established and drug related cases and crimes will be stopped.
